Football Round-Up 7th March

Afternoon all,

After their exit from the Champions League this Tuesday, news is getting worse for Manchester United as striker Wayne Rooney looks set to leave the club according to the papers from this morning. The Sun has bee nreporting that United are looking at getting £25 million for the England international. Where as The Daily Express has said United want £30 million and that Chelsea, Manchester City and PSG all interested in signing him. This news has come about after Rooney was omitted from the team that played Real Madrid on Tuesday and according to The Daily Star, Sir Alex Ferguson has lost patience with him because of his from this season

Chelsea defender David Luiz has said that the players are all desperate to win the Europa League this season. Chelsea were dumped out of the Champions League in the group stages this season after they came third in a group behind Juventus and Shakhtar Donetsk, which was a great disappointment as they won the competition last year. But Luiz has claimed that the players at Chelsea have put the disappointment behind them now and they are now looking to win the Eurpoa League to make up for it. Chelsea travel to Romanan side Steaua Bucharest tonight in the first leg of the last sixteen round

As well as Chelsea aiming for Europa League glory, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has also claimed that his side have the quality to win the competition this year. Newcastle are going to have a tricky time getting into the next round though, as they face big spending Russian side AnzhiMakhachkala tonight in the first leg of their last sixteen tie. Even Pardew has admitted that Anzhi are the toughest side that Newcastle will have faced in this years competition, but he believes that his side have enough quality to see them off. But Newcastle will be without six key players for the trip to Russia. Tim Krul and Fabricio Coloccini are both injured, Mathieu Debuchy and Yoan Gouffran are ineligible and both Papis Cisse and Jonas Gutierrez are both suffering from viruses so they could not travel

Since May 31 2012, QPR’s wage bill has more than doubled according to their latest accounts. The wage bill was £27.6 million, but since May 31st it has risen to a stagering £56 million. But this figure doesn’t take into account the last two transfer windows, and in these two transfer windows QPR have been very busy recruting the likes of Park Ji-Sung and Julio Cesar in the Summer followed by the big money signings of Loic Remy and Christopher Samba in January

Tottenham Hotspur striker Emmanuel Adebayor is a major doubt for their last sixteen first leg match against Inter Milan tonight after he suffered a knee injury during their 2-1 win over North London rivals Arsenal on Sunday. Younes Kaboul, Sandro and Tom Huddlestone are all set to miss out with knee injuries, whilst Clint Dempsey is out with a calf injury. But like Spurs, Inter have their injury prolems too, as Diego Milito is out for the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury and defenders Walter Samuel and Andrea Ranocchia are out with minor injuries

Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic is trying to ignore all of the transfer speculation surrounding him and claims that he is fully focused on the events at Stoke. Begovic was strongly linked with a move to Premier League giants Manchester United in January, but Begovic claimed that he would not be moving in January and that he remains fully loyal to Stoke. But with Stoke signing young keeper Jack Butland on deadline day, it would seem as though Stoke are preparing for life without Begovic already

Pavel pogrebnyak’s agent has saaid that the Russian is yet to make any decisions over his future and there have been claims that he will leave if the club is relegated from the Premier League. Reading are currently second from bottom in the Premier League, with only QPR below them, and to add insult to injury the Royals have lost their last three games

Brentford captain Kevin O’Connor has signed a contrat extension to keep him at the club until the Summer of 2014. O’Connor has been with the Bees since 2000 and in that time he has played 483 games for the club, scoring 43 goals. But this season has been dampened by an ankle injury he sustained in November which has seen him only play on 12 occasions for them this season

Gillingham have signed Hull City defender Danny East on loan until the end of the season

Barnet have completed the deal for Watford midfielder Ross Jenkins, which will see him join the club on a one month loan
