After coming up through the infamous Barca youth academies, Puyol has enjoyed a 19-year career including 593 appearances for Barca. Puyol trails only Xavi, having the second most ever appearances in club history.

In 15 tours with the club, Puyol has suffered 8 knee injuries and have limited him this campaign to only 12 total matches all year.

The club and player announced only one year after signing a contract extension through 2016 that they have terminated the final two years of the contract. Puyol was quoted as saying that he will likely take the summer to recover and fully heal.
