Week two of the Champions League last 16 was played this week, completing the first leg ties yet settling nothing. We now have a week off before the return legs.
Tuesday saw Arsenal take on Bayern Munich at The Emirates and Malaga travel to Portugal to face FC Porto and AC Milan and Galatasaray had home ties on Wednesday against Barcelona and Schalke respectively.
Arsenal left themselves a mountain to climb after conceding two goals in the first 20 minutes and despite a Lucas Podolski goal ten minutes in to the second half they still ended the game two behind as Mario Mandzukic fluffed a shot home with 15 minutes left to play.
Porto take a slender lead to Malaga in the second leg thanks to a Joao Moutinho goal ten minutes in to the second half. Malaga would have liked to take home an away goal but will still be confident they can overturn the deficit in three weeks’ time.
AC Milan knew they had to defend solidly against tournament favourites Barcelona and did exactly that. Even with a two goal lead they face a tough test to qualify for the quarter-finals as they travel to Camp Nou in a few weeks.
The final tie of the week was took place in Istanbul and the home side opened their account after just twelve minutes courtesy of Burak Yilmaz. Jermaine Jones equalised for the German side with 45 minutes played and now become favourites to go through, where they are likely to meet Italian champions Juventus after last weeks’ mauling of Celtic.
