Championship Round-up and Results
With all the talk on transfers today, here’s a small article about last weekend’s Championship matches to give you something else to think about.
Blackburn Rovers 4-1 Bolton Wanderers
Blackburn humiliated Bolton in their derby game with Jordan Rhodes netting twice as Blackburn Rovers secured a comfortable victory over Lancashire rivals Bolton.
Leeds United 0-1 Queens Park Rangers
QPR continued their good run of form and their promising start the championship with a narrow escape at Elland Road with Clint Hill tucking in a two-yard tap in for a Joey Barton free kick.
Barnsley 2-1 Huddersfield
Barnsley were awarded their first win of the new championship season with two first half goals at Oakwell. Chris O’Grady scored the first on eight minutes, while on-loan striker Marcus Pedersen grabbed the second just after the half-hour. However Huddersfield’s James Vaughan pulled a goal back for the visitors after 61 minutes.
Birmingham 1-1 Ipswich
Christophe Berra put the visitors ahead in the first half with a close-range looping header for his debut goal for the Tractor boys but Burke levelled the scoring in the 76th minute with a deflected left-footed shot.
Blackpool 1-0 Watford
Blackpool continued their great run of form after they snatched their second successive ‘big win’ after the victory against Reading last weekend which now sees them at the top of the table. Tom Ince scored the only goal of the afternoon as he ran at the defense before drilling a powerful shot into the bottom corner of the net.
Brighton 1-1 Millwall
Woolford got the first goal just after half time after he collected the ball from Chaplow before slotting it into the net. However Brighton were not the ones to give up easily and denied a 10-man Millwall team 3 points when Leonardo Ulloa grabbed a last minute equalizer.
Charlton 2-1 Leicester
Charlton’s Michael Morrison and Yann Kermorgant both scored against their former club to bag their first 3 points of the season. Leicster’s Drinkwater scored later on in the second half but it was to be a consolation goal as they were unable to force their way back into the game to snatch a point.
Derby 0-3 Burnley
Ing’s, Voke’s and Shackell all scored in a Burnley away day to bag another 3 great 3 points. It was a bad day office for Derby with poor defending throughout.
Doncaster 0-1 Bournemouth
Just one first half goal separated the two sides with Bournemouth’s Bret Pitman netting on the half hour mark to grab all 3 points in much needed away win.
Middlesbrough 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday
Michail Antoni grabbed the first goal when stabbing home a great finish from a corner, however just after the second half the visitors netted a goal from Mustapha Carayol and despite creating plenty of chances they could not force a winner.
Wigan 2-1 Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest were the first to bag a goal when Andy Reid curled a great shot past the wigan wall from a free kick. However Wigan had a very quick reply with Shaun Maloney coolly slotting home a spot kick after Marc-Antoine Fortune was tripped inside the box. Then just after the half hour mark Jordi Gomez scored the winner for what was the last goal of the afternoom to win all three points for the Latics.
Yeovil 0-1 Reading
Just one goal separated the two sides with Adam le Fondre slotting a controversial penalty 13 minutes from full time. Reading had a lot of pressure on them after a heavy defeat to Peterborough in the Cup and had to get all three points away to Yeovil which they narrowly achieved with both sides not looking very threatening on the attack.
