After his appointment during the week, Rafael Benitez has already landed a bombshell onto all Chelsea supporters by suggesting left back Ashley Cole, and the supporters main man Frank Lampard are to move on in the summer.
The pair have been at the club for many years, under the likes of Jose Mourinho, Guus Hiddink and even Luis Felipe Scolari…. the least said about the latter the better, and have won the Premier League, Champions League and FA cup to name a few, in their tenure with a side who currently sit 3rd in the Premier League table.
Both are approaching the ‘veteran’ stage of their career, with Frank Lampard turning 35 in June, and Ashley Cole being 31.
They have been linked with moves abroad in recent weeks with Cole being mooted with a move to PSG in France, would a final bumper contract be an appealing proposition for the defender? and Lampard being linked with a move to the MLS.
Either way, it is clear that Chelsea are building for the future, and the experienced heads of Lampard, Drogba, Cole, Essien etc are moving on to pastures new, making way for the likes of Azpilicueta, Moses and Oscar et al.
It will be a tough pill to swallow for Chelsea fans, after watching the few remaining players leave Stamford Bridge of their twilight years of winning back-to-back Premier League titles, although the future looks bright with their new expansive attacking football. If only they could defend eh?
Maybe ‘Arry will play his Uncle card, and entice Frank Lampard to Loftus Road for the second half of the season?
