Dortmund confirm Mkhitaryan transfer

Borussia Dortmund have announced a deal with Shakhtar Donetsk to sign midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Armenian was a target for a number of European with Liverpool having also met Shakhtar’s €25m price tag for the midfielder, but the Reds were not afforded the opportunity to negotiate with Mkhitaryan and Dortmund were able to reach an agreement.

Successful talks between Dortmund and Shakhtar mean 24 year-old Mkhitaryan will join the Bundesliga side for €25m and is set to sign a four-year contract, having completed a medical earlier today.

The Bundesliga runners-up posted a statement on their official website which read: “”Borussia Dortmund AG and FC Shakhtar Donetsk have agreed on the transfer of the Armenian international Henrikh Mkhitaryan, born on 21 January 1989, to Borussia Dortmund.” It went on to say “Borussia Dortmund and the player have reached a general agreement about the financial conditions of a contract running until 30 June 2017. Details are yet to be agreed upon.”

Mkhitaryan was identified by Jürgen Klopp and Hans-Joachim Watzke as an ideal replacement for Bayern-bound Mario Götze amid speculation linking the Armenian with a whole host of Europe’s bigger clubs. Liverpool in particular had expressed interest in bringing him to the Premier League, and originally looked the favourites to land his signature throughout the latter part of June.

Yet when Watzke spoke to Ruhrnachrichten following the signing of Saint-Etienne forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, he fuelled rumour mills and gossip columns in a new direction by saying “He won’t be our last signing of the summer.”

And after being compensated for Götze’s departure with €37m courtesy of rivals Bayern, Dortmund have splashed a considerable amount of it to make Mkhitaryan their marquee signing and third of the summer – following Aubameyang and former Werder Bremen defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos into Signal Iduna Park.

Last month, we posted a detailed report on Mkhitaryan here on The Football Family website, and you can read up on Dortmund’s new boy by clicking here:- Player profile: Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
