Girona have announced the signing of Stoke City defender Marc Muniesa on a season-long loan deal.
The 25 year old had fallen out of favour in the Potteries last season, making just ten league appearances including three from the bench. Muniesa, a graduate of La Masia, will be looking to reignite a stagnant career in his native Catalonia.
The club website announced: “Girona FC has reached an agreement with Stoke City on the signing of defender Marc Muniesa, one of the team’s main transfer targets for our first season in the Primera Liga. The 25 year old, born in Lloret de Mar, has arrived on loan until the end of the season.”
The signing will no doubt please manager Quique Cárcel, who had earmarked Muniesa as his main defensive target this window.
The signing represents good business for Girona, who will be hoping that Muniesa’s top-flight experience will help them to remain in the top division at the first time of asking.
Girona have been on a big recruitment drive this summer, securing loan deals for Manchester City quarter Pablo Maffeo, Marlos Moreno, Aleix Garcia and Douglas Luiz.
Whilst his playing time at Stoke has been minimal, Muniesa has become somewhat of a fan favoutite at the club, but his desire to play more regular football and move back to Spain.
