Kostas Mitroglou, or “Pistolero” as many call him for his controversial goal celebration, cannot stop scoring goals with Greek club Olympiakos and is attracting many clubs in Europe as the January transfer window looms. This season only one person has scored as many hat tricks as “Pistolero”, Cristiano Ronaldo. Both prolific scorers have bagged four hat tricks.
Scoring the hat tricks in three league games has “Pistolero” leading the Greek Super League with 14 goals. Along with the three league hat tricks, Mitroglou was the first Greek to score a hat trick in the Champions League in a match versus Anderlecht.
The turnaround Mitroglou has experienced has been astounding. After multiple disappointing seasons early in his career, “Pistolero” began to catch fire while on loan at Atromitos during the 2011-2012 season scoring 17 goals and winning Greek Super League Footballer of the Year. Upon return to Olympiakos, Mitroglou scored 20 goals in total making him the Greek Super League top scorer. Since then Mitroglou seems unstoppable in front of goal not only with club but for national team as well netting eight goals for Greece including four in 2014 World Cup Qualifiers.
In 2007 Borussia Monchengladbach sold Mitroglou to Olympiakos for only 200,000 Euros but this coming transfer window it looks that the club will be able to get a solid return on their investment. With clubs such as Arsenal, Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, and Benfica lining up for the striker, the club is in a good position to get premium price for the free-scoring forward. Being valued around £7m (approx. €8.4m) “Pistolero” would provide a boost with the free-scoring form he has been in.
With January and with whirlwind of transfer rumors and the 2014 World Cup both fast approaching, Kostas Mitroglou is a name to pay attention to.
