German outfit Hamburg have expressed an interest in signing Villarreal defender Alvaro Gonzalez.
The defender is subject to strong interest despite only arriving at Estadio de la Ceramica last season from Espanyol.
Radio Marca claim Hamburg are willing to pay between €8 and €10 million for the centre back who joined Villarreal for a fee believed to be around €3.8 million.
The German club haven’t submitted an official bid for the 27-year-old as of yet, but they are said to be very interested and that could be reflected if they are willing to pay up to €10 million.
Gonzalez made 26 appearances last season, battling for a centre back spot with Matteo Mussacchio and Victor Ruiz.
The former has now left the club to join this summer’s big spenders AC Milan for a fee in the region of 18 million.
Mussacchio’s exit has left the door ajar for Gonzalez to become one of Fran Escriba’s main options, but new arrival Ruben Semedo may also have a say in that.
Gonzalez signed a four-year deal when he joined the club last summer, and the inflated bid expected from Hamburg certainly reflects that.
Having played a significant part last season, it’s unlikely Yellows boss Fran Escriba will be happy to offload the defender.
However, it’s no secret that Villarreal like to take advantage of a profit and Hamburg – if an official bid does come in – are offering a profit margin of at least €5 million.
Gonzalez will also be keen to become a first choice defender this season and if Hamburg can offer that, then he may be lured away.
And interestingly, the 27-year-old has never stayed at a club for more than two years during his senior career.
He lasted just a year in the senior team at Racing Santander before moving to Zaragoza and ending up at Villarreal following two-year spells with Los Manos and Espanyol respectively.
Gonzalez was not involved in Villarreal’s 1-0 friendly win over Reu Deportiu on Wednesday.
