The Argentine forward is currently enjoying his honeymoon and will return to Barcelona for pre-season training on the 12th July, signing a new deal upon his arrival.
Messi and Barca have been in deep negotiations since the turn of 2017 with his father – Jorge Messi and club president Josep Bartomeu holding several meetings.
And, it is now confirmed via Barca’s official website that a deal has been struck to extend the partnership until 2021. The new deal will see Messi earn around £350,000 per week and increase his current buy-out clause to £265m.
“The Club is very happy with both the renewal and the commitment of Messi, the best player in history, who has played his full professional career at Barça and has led the team to an era of extraordinary success, the likes of which has never been seen in world football, ” a statement read from Barca on Wednesday morning.
Messi began his career with Newell’s Old Boys but was signed by Barcelona as a 13-year-old. After progressing through the ranks, the 30-year-old made his first team debut against Espanyol at the age of 17, scoring in the process.
His success there after has been unprecedented with countless La Liga titles, Champions League honours and individual accolades to mention.
With Barça, the no.10 has scored 507 goals in 583 matches and is the club’s record goalscorer, as well as La Liga’s record goalscorer.
