Newcastle United have agreed a fee for Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa for a reported £6.7 million.
The centre-back has been heavily linked to Serie A giants AC Milan, and fellow Premier League side Arsenal over the past few months, and would prove to be the ideal replacement for the likely departure of Fabricio Coloccini who looks likely to move back to Argentina due to personal problems.
The 23-year old was an ever present for the Ligue 1 side last season as they went on to become champions, and would join former team mate Olivier Giroud in moving to England's top flight.
Mbiwa is set to fly to Tyneside in the next few days to discuss personal terms with the club, and undergo a medical.
The news of the transfer being in the pipeline came just hours before the club lost at home to relegation rivals Reading after taking the lead through French International compatriot Yohan Cabaye.
