Defoe's Woking Put Gateshead to the Sword in Commanding Away Display

Jermain Defoe's Woking delivered a masterclass in away form, dismantling Gateshead 3-0 with goals from Beautyman, Ward, and a stoppage-time cherry on top from Sanderson.

There's something rather delicious about watching a former England striker trade his boots for a clipboard and actually make it work. Jermain Defoe's Woking rolled into Gateshead on April 18th and proceeded to give their hosts a footballing lesson that would've made their gaffer's playing days proud.

The Cards didn't mess about with pleasantries, taking the lead on the half-hour mark through Beautyman's opener. One imagines the travelling faithful were already dreaming of three points before the interval, though anyone who's endured enough National League football knows that optimism can be a dangerous beast.

Still, this Woking side seems to have absorbed some of their manager's clinical edge. Ward doubled their advantage in the 67th minute, a goal that effectively put the result beyond doubt and left Gateshead chasing shadows rather than equalizers.

If the home supporters were hoping for a late rally, Sanderson had other ideas. The forward chose the perfect moment to twist the knife, finding the net deep into stoppage time – seven minutes after the board went up, to be precise. Nothing quite says 'comprehensive victory' like a goal that arrives when everyone's already reaching for their car keys.

For Defoe, this represents exactly the sort of performance that validates his transition from the Premier League penalty box to the National League technical area. Managing at this level requires a different kind of nous – less about working with £50 million signings, more about extracting every ounce of quality from players who might be combining football with day jobs.

The manner of this win will particularly please the Woking boss. Away victories don't come easily at this level, where every ground presents its own unique challenges and every team is capable of an upset on their day. To not only win but to do so with such authority suggests this Cards side has genuine substance.

Gateshead, meanwhile, will be left to ponder how an afternoon that started with home advantage ended in such comprehensive defeat. The National League can be brutally unforgiving, and performances like this can quickly separate the contenders from the also-rans.

Defoe's post-match pride was entirely justified. In a league where every point matters and every performance is scrutinized, his team delivered when it counted most.
