The weekend was kicked off at White Hart Lane, where yet another Gareth Bale master class secured all three points for Tottenham against Newcastle. This saw the north London club move briefly into third until Chelsea emphatically beat Wigan at Stamford Bridge.
Arsenal kept up their chase for fourth with an away win against Sunderland, despite playing with ten men for the final half hour of the game and Manchester City were beaten by a brilliant Southampton, offering rivals Manchester United the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table to twelve points, which they did with a comfortable win over Everton on Sunday.
Swansea recorded a well-deserved win against the leagues bottom club QPR who now sit seven points off safety after Aston Villa beat West Ham thanks to goals from Christian Benteke and Charles N’Zogbia.
Elsewhere Norwich and Fulham played out a goalless draw at Carrow Road and Stoke won their first league game of 2013 at home to Reading.
Monday see’s 8th placed Liverpool play host to West Brom, who sit just two points behind in 9th, in the final game of the ‘weekend’.
