Real Sociedad – A Fans View

We spoke to Real Sociedad fan, @oierfano ahead of the new season. Here’s what was said on the clubs chances this season.

Real Sociedad finished 6th in La Liga last season to qualify for the Europa League this season. Were you happy with that outcome or could they have done better?

We were happy because since 1998, the club has not played Europa League games, leaving 2013s qualification aside -they were knocked out by Krasnodar-. It was a good season, though it is true that we think we could have fought for Champions League with a deeper squad.

The club has made great strides under Eusebio Sacristan. What are your thoughts on him as a manager?

To be honest with you, I think that Real’s success has much more to do with the quality of Illarramendi, Willian José, Xabi Prieto or David Zurutuza rather than with the managerial skills of Eusebio. I think he does not have a plan B, he just has 11 players and once he struggles with injuries, he is in trouble. I think that he will find difficulties to repeat a good season this year, with three competitions and, apparently, not a lot of signings. I don’t think he is a talented manager, but he has one of the best squads in La Liga.

Things have been quite quiet so far in the transfer market with Diego Llorente coming in and a few players going out on loan. What are your thoughts on Llorente arriving?

Such a good signing. A talented defender who can also play in the midfield when Illarramendi or Zurutuza need a rest. I think that Llorente will play for Spain soon. Navas performed well as a centre back but is he going to keep on with his good job now Diego Llorente is in the squad? Interesting clash.

Are there any areas in the squad that you think need to be improved on this summer? Has anyone been linked to fill those positions?

Many. Gero Rulli is very inconsistent and one of the reasons for this is the fact that the second goalkeeper has not even made his debut in the top flight. After Yuri’s departure to PSG, a left back is vital. The club needs a holding midfielder as well, and Vela needs a replacement, as he will probably leave the club -not sure if during the summer, after Christmas or the next summer, but his contract expires in 2018.

If you were allowed to make one realistic signing for the club who would you bring in?

Franco Di Santo.

Is there anyone in the squad that you are concerned might be tempted to move away from La Real?

Alvaro Odriozola. Real Madrid are looking for Danilo’s replacement.

What are the clubs plans this summer? Do they have any tours or training camps planned?

They will play against Watford, probably a Tour around Netherlands and the UK, but it needs to be defined yet.

Are there any youngsters at the club who you think could make the breakthrough into the first team this season?

Maybe Zubeldia and Kevin are going to play an important role, though they made their debuts last year.

What are Real Sociedad’s targets for next season?

Fighting for Europa League again.
