Since the former Argentina midfielder took over at the Spanish capital side in 2011, success has been a plenty with a 2013 Copa del Rey title, an La Liga title in 2014 and two Champions League final runners-up places.
And, it will now be music to the ears of the club’s fans as the coach has signed for a further two years on his current deal.
This comes after multiple reports in Spanish press that claimed ‘Cholo’ has asked for his contract to be reduced, having received interest from Chelsea and Manchester City before Antonio Conte took over at Stamford Bridge and Pep Guardiola at the Etihad stadium.
However, it is now confirmed that he will remain at the club until 2020.
Atleti have started the new La Liga season with four points, having drawn on the opening day of the season to newly promoted Girona and then beating Las Palmas 5-1 away from home.
They will return to domestic action following the international break with a game against Valencia, who drew with Real Madrid last time out.
Antoine Griezmann will miss the game, however, serving the final game of his current suspension.
