Southampton are about to raid Serie A once again as they look to finalise a deal for Cagliari defender Davide Astori.
It would be another ambitious move by the big spending Saints, who will look to pair the player with former Serie A midfielder Gaston Ramirez, who joined the club from Italian side Bologna during the summer.
Adkins has been linked with the centre half since December, and it appears a deal to take him to St. Marys is getting close with personal terms reporedly already agreed for the former AC Milan academy graduate.
The 25 year old, who has 2 International caps to his name with Italy, would be an ideal signing for a side who have one of the worst defences in the Premier League during the first half of the season.
A fee reported to be around £8 million has already been agreed between the two sides, with Cagliari enduring financial problems currently, which led them to accept an offer during the summer for Astori from Russian side Spartak Moscow which the player rejected.
The deal is likely to move quickly next week, with Southampton looking to bring the player over for a medical as soon as possible.
