Paolo Di Cano is wasting no time since taking charge of Sunderland, with Lazio defender Modibo Diakite set to join the club in the coming days.
The centre back will join up with his new side for pre-season and will join on a free transfer, with his contract running out with the Serie A side.
With Titus Bramble and Matthew Kilgallon being released by Sunderland earlier in the week, manager Paolo Di Canio is looking to re-shape the squad this summer, and Diakite will look to figure in the starting eleven next season alongside former Manchester United defender John O'Shea.
The 26-year old has played his whole career in Italy, spending time with Pescara, before moving to Lazio in 2006 playing nearly 100 games for the club.
The physical defender had a long spell out injured once joining the Serie A side, after breaking his Tibia by colliding with teammate Massimo Mutarelli and then Torino striker Nicola Ventola.
He has impressed over recent seasons after forming a strong partnership with Brazilian Andre Dias, who has also left the club this summer.
