Terry Butcher turns down Barnsley job

New reaching us this evening have stated Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager Terry Butcher has rejected the opportunity to manage Barnsley.

He has been mulling over the offer from the Championships relegation threatened Tykes for the past few days after they were allowed permission to speak to the former England International defender.

Reports had suggested the deal broke down over the failure to agree a deal with Inverness Assistant Manager Maurice Malpas, who Butcher wanted to take with him to Oakwell as part of his new coaching staff.

It is a bitter blow for Barnsley, who only recently approached former Nottingham Forest Manager Sean O’Driscoll about the job, who later turned down the opportunity to manage them.

In an interview with Paul Walker from BBC Sheffield, Butcher stated:

“Barnsley are a lovely club with lovely people, and i was offered a great package to there. But we have something special up here (at Inverness) and this is the best season of my managerial career and i want to finish it in style.”

David Flitcroft and Gary Megson are now the favourites for the job at a 5/2 and 3/1 respectively at SkyBet.
