Yesterday we looked back at an entertaining deadline day in the Premier League, and now we have a look at some of the big moves that were completed in the Championship as the window drew to a close.
Although a little biased, the stand out club in the Championship for me was Reading. Despite allowing Michael Hector to leave to Chelsea for £4 million (returning on loan for the season), Reading managed to bring in Benfica winger Ola John on loan for the season, and Watford striker Matej Vydra, also on loan for the season. Vydra is a proven goal scorer at this level, and a player who seemed to be attracting a lot of interest after Watford revealed he would be allowed to leave Vicarage Road. Nottingham Forest were busy, and despite only confirming the loan signing of Brighton’s Chris O’Grady yesterday, owner Fawaz Al Hasawi confirmed today that 3 more players are set to join. Palace midfielder Jonny Williams looks set to sign with Lille winger Ryan Mendes and Benfica striker Nelson Oliviera possibly being the other two to follow. Rotherham knew that strengthening was of vital importance as they find themselves bottom of the table with one point after the first five games of the season. Keeper Lee Camp joined on loan from Bournemouth while Norwich pair Tony Andreu and Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe also joined on loan. Derby completed deadline day deals for Huddersfield Town midfielder Jacob Butterfield and Bradley Johnson from Norwich, for a club record fee of £6 million. Head coach Paul Clement described the capture of Johnson as a “major coup” for the club. Preston managed to sign two strikers from Championship rivals, with Stevie May and Eoin Doyle joining from Sheffield Wednesday and Cardiff City respectively. Championship new boys bolstered their defensive ranks with the signings of Nathan Baker from Aston Villa and highly rated Liam Moore from Leicester.
Elsewhere in the Championship, Hull wrapped up a deal for Norwegian Striker Adama Diomade, Middlesbrough signed Nacional winger Carlos de Pena, Huddersfield signed Forest winger Jamie Paterson on loan, Brentford signed Shrewsbury Town man Ryan Woods, QPR signed Watford defender Gabriele Angella on loan, Fulham signed Richard Stearman from Wolves, Leeds signed Excelsior winger Jordan Botaka and Wolves completed a £1 million swoop for Swindon winger Nathan Byrne.
