In terms of versatility, technique, and overall ability, is there a better midfielder in the Premier League than Yaya Toure? The Manchester City powerhouse has 17 goals in the Premiership this season, with only the formidable Liverpool duo of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge ahead of him. Toure is the highest scoring midfielder this season, with six more goals than Steven Gerrard, who is the second highest goalscoring midfielder.
Whilst Toure does not have as many assists as Gerrard (Toure has 5 to Gerrard’s 9), it is evident that in terms of goalscoring, Yaya Toure is the best midfielder in the Premiership.
During his time at Barcelona, Toure was employed as a centre-back, in a handful of games. He has, at his time at Manchester City, played as a holding midfielder, in the centre of the park (along with Fernandinho), as an attacking midfielder, and occasionally as a striker. Such versatility is rare in a player, and is a valuable asset to any team.
Such versatility, combined with Toure’s physical prowess, is what makes Toure such a vital weapon in the Manchester City armoury. At 6ft 2in, there are few midfielders that can outpower and outmuscle the Ivorian, and consequently such physical stature allows him to control the midfield, and dictate play.
One example of this is during City’s recent fixture away to Arsenal. During the game, Toure made 55 passes, and touched the ball 70 times, therefore having a big influence on the game. Overall this season, the Ivorian’s influence has led to him scoring 21 goals in all competitions, with 7 assists, and an average pass accuracy of 89%.
Therefore, his versatility, eye for a pass, physical power and goalscoring ability is what makes Yaya Toure the best all-round midfielder in the Premier League, and an asset to any team.
